Is population growth a problem or helpful?

I have been research sources many times and here I found the article by Stephanie Feldstein at Center for Biological Diversity also discusses human population growth effects on climate change in the world especially in the U.S. She said the U.S. added about “9,441 metrics of carbon dioxide.” I cannot believe that Americans produce greenhouse gases more than double Europe. So what makes carbon dioxide emissions increase? The answer is the population growth.

The other article I found that from library debate by Peter W. Huber, it is so interesting because he discusses his opposite viewpoint about overpopulation growth in the U.S. does not effect on the environment and the crisis on it does not exist. He said that overpopulation has credited on technology, and point out that Americans make more efficient use of land. He just sees and claims on side effects of population growth such as the scientific advances use the preservative on food that makes food longer life, otherwise, that chemical makes negative ways. It might cause cancer.
They are both talking about effects population growth in the U.S. on our environment and health. When I compare these sources, I find that Stephanie Feldstein said overpopulation is bad for the environment. I agree with her because more population produces pollution through the use of cars, we must end up cutting down the trees. We need that help create oxygen, which increases carbon dioxide, a form of air pollution.
I disagree with Huber that he said population growth does not have problems. He said, “ we burn enough fossil fuel to release some 1.6 billion metric tonnes of carbon into the air each year.” When we burn fossil fuels produce gases go into atmosphere sometimes called “greenhouse gases” include carbon dioxide. These gases trap energy from the sun, making the Earth’s temperature rise. Greenhouses are used to grow the plant. They trap heat from the sun and keep the inside of the greenhouse warm. This is good for winter but in fact if human burns too much fossil fuel will cause global warming.

In my opinion, population growth is a big issue in the U.S. if we want to live longer, we need to concern about population. I think we should be concerned about population growth in the U.S., because it effects on our environment, health, jobs, and economy.

  1. I think we should all be concerned about the population growth and its impacts on the nature and biodiversity. I like the way you raise concerns about this topic by comparing two different articles. We don't want overpopulation but we want continuation of human race. Many countries around the globe are struggling for controlling their population where some are struggling for maintaining their natural population growth. Few days ago, I was looking for an article related to world population and I was surprised to know that about 20 countries in the world has negative or zero natural population growth. This data shocked me. Countries like Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Germany, Japan etc have negative natural population growth as reported by the Population Reference Bureau. Now questions arises with this data whether our productive capability in these countries has gone down or what could be the reason for this? Few questions that arise on my mind by looking your post are- Is the US overpopulated relative to its area? What are the government's planning regarding this population growth? Has we met the threshold of the population growth? I would like to read post related to these questions in your future posts. Thank you and good luck!!!!

  2. I like your topic because population growth is increasing rapidly and will continue to increase. I found it interesting that scientific advances use preservatives on food that makes food last longer, which is not okay! I would like to know how much our population is going to keep increasing by? I very much agree with the fact that the population growth effects on our environment, health, jobs, and economy.

  3. Thank you so much for your post. I agree with you that population growth is something that needs to be addressed. You chose a topic that ties into so many different areas. For instance, it's hard to talk about population growth without talking about resource distribution and consumption. For instance, the United States has a very low population growth rate compared to Sub-Saharan Africa but we use many times the resources than the average African uses. Your post makes me wonder which is a bigger factor in global warming -population growth rate or rate of consumption? I think both issues need to be looked at. I wonder if you're going to touch on efforts to curb population growth? What would these efforts look like? Also, I just heard China relaxed their one-child policy. I wonder what the impetus for this change was? Thanks for your post!

  4. What you said is true as human population goes up so do the consumption of things. Examples are more cars, houses, schools, play grounds, and more. Everyday there are tress being cut downed because human needs more space, then where do the animals go? We now know that Antarctica and North Pole has oil under the deep see, and many countries are going there to try and claim the land for their benefits. In process of getting the oils out they have to break up ice, polar bears needs the ice to hunt seals. We have problem managing our population and with it our greed (never satisfied).
